EiSIM and Social Fi Cellular Network & Industry Basic network terminology for communications channels, audio/video, data, text messaging, and commerce data covers the physical medium, transmission methods, and metrics used to measure usage for itemization and billing.

  • Bandwidth: The maximum rate of data transfer across a network path, measured in bits per second (bps, Kbps, Mbps, Gbps).
  • Throughput: The actual, measured amount of data successfully transmitted over a network in a given time.
  • Latency (Lag): The time delay between sending and receiving data, usually measured in milliseconds (ms).
  • Jitter: The variability or inconsistency in the latency of data packets, affecting real-time audio/video quality.
  • Packet Loss: The failure of data packets to reach their destination, causing gaps in data, voice, or video.
  • Communication Channels (Duplexing):
    • Simplex: Data flows in one direction only (e.g., streaming, radio).
    • Half-Duplex: Data flows in both directions, but not simultaneously (e.g., walkie-talkie).
    • Full-Duplex: Simultaneous two-way data flow (e.g., VoIP, telephone calls).
  • VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol): Technology that transmits voice calls over an IP network.
  • IPTV (IP Television): Digital television service delivered using IP over a broadband connection.
  • VOD (Video on Demand): Content available for viewing at any time.
  • Codec (Coder-Decoder): Hardware or software that compresses (encodes) and decompresses (decodes) media data (e.g., H.264, H.265 for video).
  • Bitrate: The number of bits processed per unit of time, determining the quality of audio/video.
  • Buffering: Temporary storage of data to manage variations in data speed.
  • Data Packet: A fundamental unit of data transmitted over a network.
  • SMS (Short Message Service): Standard text messaging.
  • Instant Messaging (IM): Real-time text-based communication.
  • Data Stream: A continuous, high-speed flow of data.
